Otitis Media

Otitis media is an infection of the middle ear. It produces inflammation, swelling and fluid within the middle ear. The middle ear is closed, and so the swelling pushes outwards, causing pressure on the eardrum (tympanic membrane). That pressure causes intense pain, made worse on swallowing.
