Cold sore picture
Cold sores result from a herpes simplex virus which becomes active. This virus is
latent (dormant) in afflicted people, but can be activated by conditions such as stress,
fever, trauma, hormonal changes, and exposure to sunlight. When lesions reappear, they
tend to form in the same location

Cold sore
Cold sores are quite different from canker sores, another common condition
people sometimes associate with cold sores. Though you can't cure or prevent
cold sores, you can take steps to reduce their frequency and to limit the
duration of an occurrence.
