Scabies is an intensely pruritic and highly contagious infestation of the skin caused
by a mite affecting humans and other animals. Sarcoptes scabiei var hominis
is the etiologic agent causing human scabies. It lives its entire life on the human host.
A variant of scabies is canine scabies, in which humans become infected from pets, mainly
dogs. Canine scabies (ie, mange) causes patchy loss of hair and itching in affected pets. |

This is a photomicrograph of the scabies mite. They burrows into the skin, depositing
both eggs and feces. A scabies infestation causes intense itching (pruritus) which leads
to scratching and damage of the skin (excoriation). If left untreated, the infestation may
last for years, and has been called the "seven year itch". |
